OAKLAND (CBS 5 / BCN) — A 46-year-old man was fatally shot in front of one of Oakland’s best-known churches shortly before noon Tuesday, according to police.

Police spokesman Jeff Thomason said the man, an Oakland resident, was shot at 11:43 a.m. in the 1300 block of 85th Avenue, next to Allen Temple Baptist Church.

Officers who responded found the man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Thomason said.

He said police were following up on several leads but didn’t have a suspect description.

Church officials weren’t immediately available for comment.

The church, which was founded in 1919, has had many prominent visitors over the years, including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who spoke there on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2005.

omg…I really wish people would go take a damn freshman English class and learn the tenets of a logical argument. The protests were in response to Oscar’s shooting because a cop…someone who is supposed to protect the community committed the murder. That fact does not equate AT ALL to people protesting every murder in Oakland. Street violence is a fact of life…being unarmed and killed by police is not and should not be. Not that street violence should have to be a fact of life.

Maybe if there were enough protests against the murders and people felt safer about testifying because the tolerance for murder was lower….

ShutUp

@Dave: You seem to want to educate everyone on the tenets of logical argument, yet completely fail to adhere to those tenets you so espouse all the while rambling on about facts this and facts that. Where do I start. You say “The protests were in response to Oscar’s shooting because a cop, someone who is supposed to protect the community committed the murder”. In fact, he was protecting the community, from Oscar Grant. Furthermore, I don’t know if you’re unaware or if it’s pure ignorance that prevents you from accepting the facts of the Oscar Grant case but the trial is over buddy. Manslaughter, not murder, fact.
