Elderly Man Killed In Oakland Hit And Run

OAKLAND (BCN) - An elderly man was struck and killed in a hit-and-run in Oakland early Friday morning, a police spokesman said.

Police received a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian at 14th and Market streets at 6:05 a.m., Oakland police Officer Jeff Thomason said.
When officers arrived, they found the 91-year-old victim lying in the roadway and unresponsive, Thomason said.

Despite the efforts of the Oakland Fire Department along with American Medical Response paramedics, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle in question, a four-door sedan, was traveling north on Market Street and hit the man while turning left onto 14th Street.

Thomason said the victim was walking "somewhere in the area of the marked crosswalk."

The sedan fled the scene before police arrived.

The victim's identity is being withheld until his family is notified of the death.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department's traffic investigation section at (510) 777-8570.
