San Francisco Police Chief Denies Misconduct Probe

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - San Francisco Police Chief George Gascon has vigorously denied that his department is investigating any of its officers over allegations of money laundering and narcotics sales.

A report by the San Francisco Examiner quoted Chief Gascon as saying there is a major internal affairs probe going on within the department.

But San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Lynn Tomioka said the chief's remarks before the Police Officers Association's Board of Directors were misinterpreted.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

"Since he has come to the city, the chief has made it very clear that he's going to run a police department that is transparent," she said. "We don't want to put fear into the public that we have cops out there that are also criminals."

Gascon was describing the new internal affairs criminal unit and the types of cases it would consider as major.
