Winter Shelter Opens Its Doors In San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) _ The homeless have a new refuge in San Francisco as a winter shelter opened its doors on Sunday at just the right time.

St. Boniface Church on Golden Gate Avenue is the first stop for the Interfaith Council's winter shelter program.

"We're doing 65 at this location. We're going to be here for three weeks, and then we move up to Cathedral Hill, to St. Mary's," said shelter supervisor Ernest Calvin. "I believe we're doing 110 in that church."

KCBS' Bob Butler Reports:

Calvin said it's basically first come, first serve.

"We will pass out tickets at 6 p.m. and get them in by 6:30," he said. "7 o'clock is dinner and then they go to their sleeping area."

They get breakfast in the morning, then have to head out to make room for school kids.

Plumber Vince Pizzatola just moved to the Bay Area from New Orleans and was first in line.

"I built a Coast Guard building in New Orleans and they laid me off," he said. "I got tired of New Orleans and always liked San Francisco, so I came out here."

Pizzatola said he hopes to get everything squared away during his time at the shelter before heading out and looking for a job.
