2 Quakes Strike Near Bethel Island
BETHEL ISLAND (CBS/BCN) -- The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.6 struck early Friday morning in Contra Costa County.
According to the USGS, the quake shook an area in the northeast corner of the county near Bethel Island at 1:29 a.m., 15 minutes after a 3.1-magnitude tremor rattled roughly the same location.
The quake had a depth of about one mile -- compared with 6.8 miles for the larger tremor -- and an epicenter located 6 miles east-southeast of Oakley and 17 miles west of Stockton, according to the USGS.
