Cal Grads Imprisoned In Iran Call Families

(KCBS) - The mother of one of the Cal grads imprisoned in Iran said she knew even as the phone rang this past weekend that it was a call from her son.

The phone call brought joy and anguish to Shane Bauer's mother.

It was 6:05 Saturday morning when Cindy Hickey's cell phone started to ring. Hickey said she was very happy to hear her son's voice on the other end. The two hadn't spoken since May.

KCBS' Rebecca Corral Reports:

With a five-minute time limit, the first thing she did was ask her son what he wanted to talk about. Her son asked about his case, saying he hasn't heard any news. He, along with his fiancee Sarah Shourd and their friend Josh Fattal, were arrested more than a year ago along the Iraqi border and charged with spying. Shourd was freed in September.

Hickey was alarmed to hear her son say that the jailers are withholding their mail.

Fattal called his mother as well.

Their trial is set for February 7, 2011.
