A fresh tree is more environmentally friendly than an artificial tree – Please see this NY Times article – and the related study data .

Your discussion only looked as disposal of the tree. Fresh trees encourage tree farming and planting, and the growing trees help clean the air while they are in the ground, for the years before harvesting. In Fremont, our trees are put into the green waste and included in the collective composting by our waste disposal company.
