Overturned Big-Rig Blocks Hwy. 101 In Mountain View For Hours

MOUNTAIN VIEW (BCN) -- A big-rig overturned on northbound U.S. 101 in Mountain View Thursday afternoon, blocking lanes of the highway for about four hours, a California Highway Patrol sergeant said.

The crash was reported shortly after 12:40 p.m. on northbound Highway 101 at North Shoreline Boulevard, CHP Sgt. John Carman said.

When the big-rig overturned, it spilled about 100 pounds of dry lime powder onto the highway, blocking the two far right lanes and the off-ramp to North Shoreline Boulevard, Carman said.

Dry lime is used in construction and industrial applications.

Crews responded and treated the situation as a hazardous materials case, containing the dry lime before any of it could get washed into a storm drain, he said.

After cleaning up the spill and getting the big-rig upright and off of the roadway, the two right lanes and the off-ramp were reopened around 4:40 p.m., Carman said.

No one was injured in the crash, he said.
