UC Berkeley To Lay Off About 150 Employees
BERKELEY (KCBS/AP) -- The chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley says the school will layoff nearly 150 employees this year.
Chancellor Robert Birgeneau announced the layoffs, which will not include faculty positions, in a letter to the campus on Thursday.
University officials say most of the affected employees will be let go by June. Some have already been notified.

Another 150 or so jobs are expected to be eliminated through retirements and voluntary departures.
The job losses will save about $20 million.
Like other University of California campuses, UC Berkeley has seen major cuts in state funding that have led to higher student fees. The campus, which employs about 21,000 people, has already eliminated more than 500 jobs in the past few years.
The layoffs come as Governor Jerry Brown proposes cutting $500 million from the University of California system.
