There were many Bay Area observances of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. There were also a number of community service projects planned. For a listing of those, visit mlkday.gov.
"Sustaining the Dream" at Yerba Buena Gardens, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Events include a march at 11 a.m. that starts at Fourth and Townsend streets, free entrance to the Museum of the African Diaspora and the Contemporary Jewish Museum, and the performance "King in Five Vignettes" at 12:15 p.m. at Novellus Theater. For more information, visit www.norcalmlk.org/2011.

The Dream Lives On: Multicultural Peace Celebration & Rally, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Oakland Police Chief Anthony Batts will give the keynote address and Mayor Jean Quan will also speak at the ILWU union hall, 99 Hegenberger Road. Admission is free. For more information call (510) 798-5535.
