SAN PABLO (BCN) – A San Pablo police officer shot and killed a wanted parolee Tuesday night after the man allegedly pointed a loaded gun at the officer during a struggle, police said Wednesday.

The incident began at about 8:12 p.m. when an officer pulled over a car at a gas station at 2500 San Pablo Dam Road.

The officer had spoken with the driver, a woman, and two men who were passengers in the car and had then gone back to his patrol car to check the woman’s license when he saw the woman and the front seat passenger get out of the car, according to police.

The man was holding a black backpack in front of his waist area, police said.

The officer ordered the pair to get back in their car, but instead the man ran around to the back of the gas station and dropped the backpack, police said.

The officer ran after him and saw him reaching into his waistband, police said.

According to police, the officer ordered the man multiple times to stop, then discharged his Taser.

The man jumped a hedge while still holding his waistband and fell on the ground. The officer struggled with him and then allegedly felt a gun in the man’s waistband, police said.

The officer continued to order the man to stop resisting, police said, but he broke free from the officer’s grip and stood up.

The man then allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it in the officer’s direction, police said.

The officer pushed the gun away and fired multiple shots at the man, according to police.

When the man was hit by the gunfire and fell down, the officer called for medical aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

His name was not being released Wednesday morning because his family hadn’t yet been notified of his death, a deputy coroner said.

KCBS’ Margie Shafer Reports:

Police said the man had “an extensive criminal history” and was a parolee at large.

His gun was loaded and cocked when officers checked it, police said.

The other two people who were in the car were cooperating with investigators.

As is protocol with officer-involved shootings, the case was being investigated by San Pablo police, the Contra Costa County sheriff’s office and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave.
