Santa Cruz Entrepreneurs Invited To DC For State Of The Union Address

SANTA CRUZ (KCBS) - The owners of a Santa Cruz ice creamery were being treated to some of the best seats in the House for Tuesday evening's State of the Union address.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

The owners of the Penny Ice Creamery shop received an invitation last week to sit with First Lady Michelle Obama during the State of the Union.

"I'm feeling excited," Kendra Baker said. "Is there any other way to feel?"

"I don't know, we're still kind of reeling," echoed her business partner, Zachary Davis. "I don't think we'll really believe it happened until after it's over."

The Santa Cruz small business owners received a $250,000 federal stimulus loan in 2010 to start scooping organic ice cream. They thanked the White House by posting a video on YouTube that went viral, which prompted a phone call from Vice President Joe Biden.

The State of the Union invitation followed.

"It's a real honor to be the ones that are standing up for all those hard-working Americans," Davis declared.
