San Francisco Supervisors Lay Out Mayoral 'Question Time' Guidelines

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)- Look for "Question Time" to begin at the San Francisco Board of Supervisors early next month. That's when the supervisors will get their first chance to publicly question Mayor Ed Lee.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

Last November voters approved a charter amendment mandating a monthly appearance by the mayor at the Board of Supervisors. It was something that former Mayor Gavin Newsom refused to do.

On Tuesday, Board President David Chiu introduced legislature to set up the guidelines, adding that it would begin on March 8th. He said communication has improved with Mayor Ed Lee, but it's still not good enough.

"The voters want these questions and others to be given, and for answers to be received in public," said Chiu.

Mayor Lee says he hopes the questions will show the public how policy is made.

"What I'm hoping for, and I will instill with him, is that it not just be what we've been calling Question Time," said Lee.

The legislation says the mayor must receive the questions a week in advance, unless there's an urgent issue. A super majority of the board can remove questions from the list, and Mayor Lee can make an opening five minute statement.
