Lafayette Store Owner Shoots Masked Robbers

LAFAYETTE (CBS/BCN) — Two men who were robbing a jewelry store in Lafayette on Friday afternoon were shot at by the store’s owner, a Contra Costa County sheriff’s spokesman said Saturday.

The robbery was reported at about 1:45 p.m. Friday at Prive Manufacturing Jewelers, a store located at 3557 Mt. Diablo Blvd., sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Two suspects wearing masks came into the store and started smashing display cases. The owner of the store, who thought he heard shots fired in the store, took out a gun and fired two shots at the suspects, Lee said.

One of the men appeared to have been hit by the gunfire, and the suspects fled in a waiting car that was driven by a third suspect, according to Lee.

The suspect vehicle collided with another car while fleeing, but the suspects were still able to get away, Lee said.

Lee did not know if anything was taken from the store, but the owner of the store, who did not want to give his name, said jewelry was taken during the robbery.

About a half hour later, the sheriff’s office received a call from Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley, where a 24-year-old man had arrived with gunshot wounds.

Deputies responded to the hospital and are trying to confirm whether the man is one of the robbery suspects, Lee said.

The owner said sheriff’s investigators told him the man at the hospital claimed he had been shot in Oakland.

No other suspect information was available as of Saturday afternoon, Lee said.

The 2nd Amendment gives us the right to defend ourselves in this and any scenario where we need to defend for our lives and property and this is the heart and soul of Gun Rights. We pray to God that we never have to use a lethal weapon ; but be willing and legally able to do so if necessary.

  • Scott

You are wrong, Peter. I am not against gun rights, but the 2nd amendment was not created for personal safety. The 2nd Amendment was created to protect citizens from the government, which is kind of a joke at this point, because I don’t think any of us will be obtaining more firepower than the military anytime soon. But the 2nd Amendment was NOT intended for personal safety from a robber.

    Yeah, get em.

In 2008 and 2010, the Supreme Court issued two Second Amendment decisions. In District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), the Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess a firearm, unconnected to service in a militia[1][2] and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.

  • ray

Scott, looks like the court doesn’t agree with you

Ray – The Heller case specifically addressed the Washington D.C. ban on handgun possession and ownership within the District. The 2nd Amendment was created for the reason that Scott stated, to allow citizens to be able to defend themselves from a tyrannical government. The issues addressed in Heller do not contradict this. Heller is simply one of the court addressing what should have been corrected a LONG time ago, which is that the 2nd Amendment applies to individuals and not the collective ‘militia’. All other court decisions regarding every other Amendment have made it clear they deal specifically with individuals but the Supreme Court has been dancing for years to avoid clarifying that the 2nd Amendment also applies to individual citizens.

I know its wrong for me to say but I am glad those thugs were shot. There have been too many Oakland thugs robbing stores in Walnut Creek, Concord, and Lafayette. They know that these areas are not as crazy as Oakland so they come to contra costa.

Hey popoman (mall security guard masquerading as a police officer). We’ve seen posts from your friends denouncing your dreams if real law enforcement. This has nothing to do with the tools of your security guard trade, a flashlight, whistle and keys. This topic is for real police officers such as myself. Richmond Police.

This is why people call cops “pig” – all because of their attitude.

“this topic is for real police officer such as myself”

I’d say this topic is for anyone who want to express their opinion. You’re entitled to yours, and I entitled to mine. PIG!
And no, I am not a Gang banger or anything, I just hate cop who thinks they are above the laws. Shame on you!

        W, I don’t think I’m above the law…..I “Am” the law.

I am glad to hear the store owner POPPED ’em!!!
Just give them a dose of their own medicine and bust a few good shots at them. Usually they go running like a scared little boy. If they don’t and they try to shoot back, hopefully you’re quick and you get him first.
I”m sorry but we need to stop playing TEA PARTY with these f***ing CRIMINALS!
Thugs just rob and steal and hurt whoever they want and think they’re too slick to get caught. Well here’s my rule for both my home, and my business…
IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE…… DON’T BREAK & ENTER MY PROPERTY!! Just like that man from Elverta. Except I don’t have a sign, they would learn the hard way. But hey it’s their choice!!! Nobody’s forcing them to commit these robberies and burglaries. Life is what you make it. If you make a living by burglarizing and stealing, then you’re asking to get shot. Its that simple

Good for the store owner — these punks got quite a surprise, and they deserved it… It’s ABOUT TIME the community fights back and takes back our streets..
