Tense SWAT Standoff In Daly City Ends With Suspects' Surrender

DALY CITY (BCN) -- A police standoff in Daly City Monday, prompted by a domestic disturbance in which shots were fired, ended peacefully with two people being detained, a police spokesman said.

The SWAT team responded to a report of shots fired near the corner of West Market Street and Mission Street at about 5 a.m., Daly City police Detective Albert Cisneros said.

Cisneros said about five shots were fired from a home on West Market Street into a cinderblock wall outside. No one was hit by the gunfire.

Two officers who were in the neighborhood responded quickly and tried to enter the home where the shots had come from, but a woman inside refused to let them in, he said.

Cisneros said police learned that the woman was inside the home with her boyfriend, and a standoff began that lasted more than six hours.

A SWAT team was called out and the street was cordoned off.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

At one point, authorities tossed a phone into the home to establish contact with the couple, Cisneros said.

The woman was very upset during the standoff, but police don't believe she was being held against her will, Cisneros said.

At about 11:15 a.m., the man and woman, described by police as in their mid-20s to early 30s, were taken into custody peacefully. Their names have not yet been released.

Cisneros said shortly after the standoff ended that no weapon was found but that police had located ammunition inside the home. Investigators were still searching the home early Monday afternoon.

While the standoff was under way, the atmosphere at the scene was quiet, with onlookers watching and waiting outside of the yellow police tape, said Emily Haag, an employee at a nearby Walgreens on San Pedro Road.

She said she saw SWAT team members pointing their guns at a home down the street from the store.

Alvaro Rios, a chef and part owner of Al Fin restaurant at 7398 Mission St., said he had to slightly delay the restaurant's opening this morning because of the standoff.

"I found out about this situation because someone told me my restaurant was on the news," he said.

He was able to open the restaurant for business at about 11:20 a.m., he said.
