Sunnyvale Man To Be Arraigned For Cold Case Murder

SUNNYVALE (KCBS/BCN) - Just weeks after reactivating its cold case unit, detectives in Santa Clara County announced that they had already solved their first outstanding murder investigation.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

Wednesday, Gary Swierski, 50, of Sunnyvale, was arrested for the death of his wife, Reina Swierski, six years ago.

Swierski was reported missing in March 2005. Her body has never been found, but her skull was discovered near Boulder Creek in April 2008.

Newly-elected Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen re-opened the cold case unit, ordering investigators to use DNA evidence to investigate unsolved murders, rapes and violent assaults.

The cold case unit worked with the county crime lab and the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety on the case.

Swierski was scheduled to be arraigned for his wife's murder in Palo Alto on Friday.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call Department of Public Safety Detective Greg Giguiere at (408) 730-7288.
