Teen Hit By Apparent Random Gunshot In Moraga

MORAGA (CBS SF) - A man installing a fence in a remote area south of Moraga was apparently shot Tuesday afternoon, but investigators were unable to find a suspect and nobody heard a gunshot, Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said Wednesday.

The victim, an 18-year-old man, was working on a fence at 30 Quail Crossing when he was injured, Lee said.

He notified his co-corkers, who brought him to a nearby ranch, where they called for help at about 4:45 p.m., Lee said.

Paramedics arrived and the victim was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. He underwent surgery that night, but Lee said he did not have an update on the man's condition this morning.

The California Highway Patrol searched the area by helicopter while sheriff's deputies searched on the ground with a police dog, but aside from the victim's injury, they found no evidence of a shooting.

Nobody saw anyone with a gun or heard a gunshot.

Lee said the sheriff's office is investigating the case as an assault with a deadly weapon, but "at this point we can't even confirm exactly what happened."
