ConsumerWatch: Last-Minute Help For Bay Area Tax Filers

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) -- This year's tax filing deadline is April 18th. If you haven't filed yet, there is plenty of free help available for last-minute tax filers.

The United Way and other community organizations are offering free tax clinics at nearly 150 locations in the Bay Area. Most are open to individuals who earn less than $49,000 a year. IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers handle all the paperwork for both state and federal returns.

"We've already done more taxes this year than we've done all last year," said Sayla Eisner-Mix, a tax counselor at the People's Federal Credit Union, a free clinic site.

Individuals who earn up to $58,000 a year can take advantage of the IRS's free tax filing program. Twenty companies affiliated with the IRS will do your taxes online for free. It's estimated 70 percent of taxpayers could be eligible.
