San Jose Community Colleges Host Kids Career Fair

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – The average student age at San Jose's community colleges took quite a dip Thursday as hundreds of kindergartners came on campus for a kids' career fair.

The kindergartners streamed out of buses and onto campus at both San Jose City and Evergreen Valley Colleges Thursday morning with each group wearing matching baseball caps and name tags stating possible future professions.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

"I want to be a chef because they do a lot of cool things and they get to serve people," said Alex Muggie from Adalante Elementary in San Jose.

The annual event introduces kids, even very young ones, to the idea that if they want good jobs, such as positions as chefs or police officers, they've got to go to college.

State budget cuts are making college more expensive and harder to get into according to City College President Barbara Cavalier.

"It's difficult now. Every semester, for certain courses, we have a long wait list," said Cavalier. San Jose City College is facing about a four-and-a-half million dollar deficit this year.
