East Bay Thieves Steal Thousands Worth Of Hair Weaves

SAN LEANDRO (CBS 5) - A group of burglars bypassed the cash register and ignored flat screen TVs during a recent San Leandro beauty shop break-in. Instead, the crooks were caught on tape making off with tens of thousands of dollars worth of human hair.

At first, the YouTube video of the caper looks like any other break in, with the criminals kicking in the door of Hair Divas Distributors - but instead cleaning out the cash, the men made off with armfuls of wigs and hair extensions.

Owner Ann Davis said Hair Divas is the only Bay Area business that offers human hair directly from India, where women sacrifice their strands for religious reasons. Davis then buys the hair to create high-priced hairpieces for women.

Police said criminals know the value of these real hair wigs, and the trend of thieving weaves is growing rapidly.

The crooks appeared to know exactly what they were looking for during the break-in, and didn't even touch the cheap hair.

"They took the most expensive hair," said Davis. "They are familiar with this industry and they know the value."

Davis was forced to close Hair Divas for the time being, but said she hopes the shop can bounce back.
