Security Gates Going Up On Golden Gate Bridge

SAUSALITO (KCBS) - A new security measure has been added to the Golden Gate Bridge. Specifically, the first of four new gates has been added in an effort to keep people from climbing on the span's main cables.

KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:

This first gate is certainly visible to the public.

"We've added one and we added it adjacent to the scaffolding that we have on the west cable as the first test point," explained Golden Gate Bridge District spokesperson Mary Currie. "It's just something that was on our list of many things to get to in terms of upgrades and we've arrived at that point.

The gate essentially looks like an antenna with a door, and includes steel branches to keep people from getting around.

"This is a very typical feature on many bridges across the country and around the world," said Currie, who added that very few people have actually tried to climb onto the cables themselves. "Since 9/11 there have been two occasions whereby some folks have jumped onto that main cable and run up to the tower before we've had a chance to get to them."

The security gate was manufactured in-house, and painted "international orange" to blend in with the rest of the span.
