Suspected Oakland Prostitute Leaves Babies Alone In Car

OAKLAND (CBS/AP) -- A suspected prostitute in Oakland left her twin babies in a car while she worked, according to police.

The 25-year-old Stockton woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon during a sting operation.

Police said the woman, identified as Jill McVay, was seen loitering near a dirty Oldsmobile, agreed to paid sex and got into the car of an undercover officer.

Sgt. Roland Holmgren said other officers stopped the vehicle a few blocks away and the McVay said her 1-month-old boy and girl were back in her car. The babies were found sleeping in car seats and were turned over to Child Protective Services.

Holmgren said the woman indicated she needed money to get home to Stockton and asked: "What else am I supposed to do?"'

KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:

A march on International Boulevard the same day was held to call attention to the way children are exploited by prostitution. The McVay's arrest offered a grim examples of other ways the sex trade can harm children, said Capt. Ed Tracey.

"Once she gets picked up by a john, she can be many, many blocks away. And sometimes these prostitutes are victims of assaults, rapes, kidnappings. Those poor babies could have been there for a long period of time," he said, with potentially deadly consequences.
