ConsumerWatch: Hacked Facebook Account Could Cost You

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) -- Having your Facebook account hacked can be a hit to your reputation and a nuisance. It could also cost you money. But there are steps to protect your profile and your pocketbook.

According to Brian Cooley with CNET, users can set their account to receive an alert anytime an unfamiliar device logs onto their account. Users could also set up a secure connection. According to Cooley both these features are found by clicking on "Account Settings" then "Account Security."

For one Bay Area man, both of these features became handy when someone hacked into his Facebook account for the second time. When Jason Spencer's account was hacked for the first time, he noticed an $81 charge on a credit card he kept on file. But when he tried to dispute the charges he said Facebook refused to drop them.

"They basically told me someone in my household or someone known to me was the one that did it," Spencer said. "They didn't see any suspicious activity in my account."

But when Spencer received an alert stating someone in Chicago had accessed his account, he said Facebook removed the charges. In an email to CBS5, Facebook would not comment on Spencer's case. But the social networking giant told CBS5 they are committed to serving users the best way the can.
