ANSWER: According to Theresa Carillo, Chair of Raza Studies at San Francisco State University, the battle of Puebla was a turning point in Mexican history. In 1862, the Mexican militia was greatly outnumbered but managed to defeat a better equipped and trained French Army which bolstered national pride.
