(KCBS) – As Skype becomes an increasingly relevant communication tool, billing methods by phone companies are being forced to change.

KCBS Tech analyst Larry Magid discusses how you can’t measure Skype calls in billable minutes, which means running out of minutes on your cell phone plan could be a thing of the past.

KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid:

Magid said the difference between making a call on Skype rather than a cell phone, you’re using data rather than cellular minutes.

Magid said it seems like wireless companies realize voice over Internet is here to stay, and they need to figure out a way to make money and sell gigabytes rather than minutes.
