Baby Inside Car Stolen From Morgan Hill Found Safe In Salinas

MORGAN HILL (KCBS / CBS 5) – Authorities said a missing baby girl, who was in the backseat of a car stolen from a Morgan Hill church parking lot on Tuesday afternoon, was found in the Salinas area several hours later.

A police official told KCBS radio that it appeared the girl was “fine.”

Relatives told CBS 5 that the girl was found along with the car and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. At the rural scene, California Highway Patrol officers cordoned off a wide area around the vehicle – but offered no further details.

KCBS’ Mike Colgan Reports:

The CHP had issued a state-wide Amber Alert after the white 1991 Infiniti Q45 with California license plate number 5XJW448 was stolen from the St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church parking lot, at 17400 Peak Avenue in Morgan Hill, shortly before 2 p.m.

The girl inside the car, Mariana Corona, was described as a 1-month-old Hispanic toddler wearing flowery pajamas.

“Her mother had gone to the food bank at St. Catherine’s and ran in for five minutes,” said Morgan Hill Police Capt. Joe Sampson. “She left the girl in the car seat (with the keys still inside) and when she came out, the vehicle was gone.”

Sampson told the San Jose Mercury News that investigators think the vehicle, and not the child, was the target and that the thief may not have immediately realized Mariana was inside. The abandoned car is being examined for clues, but no suspects have been apprehended.

“We believe it was a crime of opportunity. Someone walked by, saw the keys and said to themselves, ‘Here is an opportunity for a joyride,'” Sampson said.

Sampson said the baby was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

Really? All signs indicate this kid never had much of a chance in the first place. I will, however, predict that the thief was not aware that the child was in the car and that it is likely now parked on some sidestreet with an “anonymous” call to the police disclosing its location. Something tells me the child would have been better off with the thief than its brainiac/ over-achieving mother.

You have got to be kidding. This idiot-woman left her 1 month old in the car by themselves?! Child Protective Services better step in! I am sickened by this!

    • Dude

I agree, this so called mother has no business with a child.

  • Eddy Merkx

    Stupid is as stupid does!

    • Phil McCrackin

LOL…. you mean like people who can’t spell Eddy Merckx correctly?

  • Chrisenda Jáquez

I hope they press child endangerment charges against the so called Mother! Stupid Freaken B*t*H!

  • J

It’s not a good idea to leave your child in the car by themselves, let alone, with the keys in the car, even for a second!!!!!!

  • Erik Pitkin

Definetely a candidate for “MOTHER OF THE YEAR” ! NO COMMON SENSE WHATSOEVER! Makes you wonder how many other neglected/abused kids’ she’s got helping her collect welfare at the house. Freakin lady had her sister talking to the press on tv. Either she felt stupid or no English, probably the later.

To the mom. Please don’t leave your daughter in the car alone, even for 5 ninutes while going to the food bank. Please take your daughter with you, including the keys after locking the car. Too many cars are stolen daily and they are usually never recovered. Your daughter is the most important part of you. Once she is gone, so does a part of you. Fortunately you are lucky to have your daughter back and safe. Please take this as a reminder the result of good fortune. Always learn how to be a responsible mother and to make sure that you never leave your car doors unlocked, the keys in the ignition and even , to never leave your daughter alone in the car. She is the most valuable part of you, too valuable for you to lose.

The same situation happened in New Orleans 3 yrs ago, a mom left the baby in the car while sleeping in the carseat, a thief stole the SUV Cadillac, and so on… Don’t get me wrong, I also have my own kids but I think some parents never really care about the safe of their kids, specially for an infant like this. I’m glad there’s an angel watching that babe, and to her mom , I hope she learned a lesson and that she would regret what she had done.

I really hope the mother is charged…only an idiot would leave a baby in a car with the keys!!! What is wrong with people???

  • Phil McCrackin

Honestly, I’d rather deport your uneducated ass instead.

  • Phil McCrackin

!mbecile poster didn’t check his racism at the door.

  • The Truth

To all the people who want the mother “charged” with a crime:

Does she deserve to be charged? Yes.

    Is she an idiot? Yes.

Is the child going to be better off with Child Protective Services? No.

I know it sounds romantic that CPS can swoop in and save the day, but the realities are that CPS agencies are inept. Are there a few diamonds in the rough there? Sure. However all in all, this is just another horrifically run government agency.

The best thing that can happen to this baby is that she stays with her mother (especially at 1 month old where she is still likely bre-ast-feeding) and that her mother learns a very valuable lesson the hard way.

People in the United States just want to throw EVERYONE in jail. It is precisely because of many people like the ones here why we have the highest number of people in prison BOTH in aggregate and per capita of any nation in the entire world. Stop and think about that… China has ONE BILLION MORE people than we have and yet we still have more people in jail!

    “Land of the free” indeed.

Stop and think about the dichotomy between getting a driver’s license and having a baby. How many hours of written tests, driving tests, driving practice with parents, driving practice with a licensed instructor, eye exams, etc it takes to get a license, then stop and think about how many hours it takes a 16 year old girl to become “qualified” to have a baby… it’s like 100 to 0. Our society is so se-xually repressed that we can’t even educate our children on how to be good parents. We deem it more important to teach our children about King Louis the XVIXLCXIVMLCIIV than we do preparing them for REALITY. It’s mind-boggling.

In any event, the police, jail and government agencies are NOT the answers to all of society’s woes (despite popular belief as is evidenced here). This woman should be forced to take a bunch of parenting clas-ses, do some community service as “penance” and be taught how to raise her baby properly. That is in the best interest of the baby and the community as a whole.

  • EA

To all the racist pple…the mother was born here…she is educated..and does have a job…before u critisize others look in the mirror and take a good look at yourself..people make mistakes..i think she will think twice..she is a friend…and i support her..SHE LUVS HER BABY GIRL VERY MUCH..

    • Jeffrey Hall-Cottrell

Um, EA, while I agree with you that people make mistakes, I just think this goes beyond a simple oops…..And I don’t doubt for a second that she loves her baby, but she isn’t too bright to have left a one month old in a car and with the flipping keys to boot…..I am glad that you support her and you are a friend to her she is going to need all the friends she can get….And I don’t care where she was born or what her race is or any of that…She still needs a public flogging and I think she will never do that again….

  • Educated Driver

Do we need to have a another bell to our cars that warn us when a child is left in the car??? I know some cars have alarms to let you know your keys are still in the key hole.
A message like this….. “Alert a child or pet is in your car please remove it and lock your car”

  • Christian

I agree with majority with the comments here. The mother of this child should be charged for child neglect because I thought, like pets, you are not supposed to leave them unattended in a car.
