No Major Layoffs Expected In San Francisco's Budget

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Better-than-expected tax revenues may help San Francisco avoid mass layoffs as it struggles to close a $306-million budget deficit.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

Mayor Ed Lee is quoted as saying that the budget plan he'll present to supervisors on Wednesday will contain cuts in services to the homeless.

But, the improving economy has provided about $47 million in unexpected tax revenue to help blunt the pain.

Without the money, there were concerns that the city might have to slash services and lay off police officers in order to balance the budget.

Lee also is in talks with police and firefighter unions about deferring more than $24 million in raises that are coming due.
