Oscar Grant Supporters Protest Mehserle's Release At Oakland BART Station

OAKLAND (AP) -- About 300 supporters of Oscar Grant, the man shot and killed by former transit police officer Johannes Mehserle on a train station platform, are now demonstrating outside of Oakland City Hall.

The protesters first gathered at Oakland's Fruitvale BART station, then marched to City Hall. During the march, about 200 people joined in along the way, adding to the original group of about 100 people.

Police are reporting one arrest, saying they took a man into custody for spraying graffiti.

The crowd is protesting Mehserle's planned release Monday from a Los Angeles County jail, where he served his 11 months of a two-year sentence.

The 29-year-old Mehserle was convicted last July of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of the 22-year-old Grant on a Bay Area Rapid Transit train station platform on New Year's Day 2009.
