Vietnam Town Shopping Center Opens Its Doors In San Jose

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – One of the Bay Area's largest new shopping centers, Vietnam Town in East San Jose, opened its doors to the community on Saturday.

The 300,000 square foot shopping center on Story Road has 265 shopping units.

Controversy over the center has died down, after a battle broke out a few years ago between San Jose city leaders and Vietnamese activists over the name of the business district where the shopping center is located.

Little Saigon finally won out. Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese said there was also controversy over the name of the center itself.

KCBS' Betsy Gebhart Reports:

"There was some concern that large shopping centers like this one, that have a different name than that, Vietnam Town, might somehow create confusion or controversy," said Cortese. "But I think as time goes on, that really won't be an issue."

Almost all of the units at the center have been sold to private customers, although a few are still available.
