Fairfield Police Arrest Pipe Bomb Suspect
FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) -- Fairfield police arrested the man allegedly responsible for two explosive device incidents after an eight-hour standoff Saturday, police said.
Daniel Garcia, 29, surrendered after a SWAT team deployed tear gas into his home in the 1600 block of Quincey Lane, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of using a destructive device.
On Friday, police named Garcia as a suspect in two incidents involving explosives and issued a $200,000 warrant for his arrest.
On May 27, police discovered that a pipe bomb had been detonated under a parked vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Phoenix Drive.
The owner of the vehicle put out the fire from the explosion before police arrived. The blast caused minor damage to the vehicle's undercarriage, police said.
Fairfield police executed a search warrant at Garcia's home on Thursday, and found an explosive device and the materials used to make it.
On Saturday, officers received a tip that Garcia had returned home. Once police arrived, he refused to communicate with officers and ignored orders to surrender until the tear gas was used, police said.
Police also arrested 29-year-old resident Jimmie Hicks, who was in the home with Garcia, on suspicion of obstruction. Garcia, who was on probation for unrelated narcotics offenses, was also arrested on suspicion of probation violation.
The Fairfield Police Department SWAT team, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Task Force, Yolo County Bomb Squad, and FBI Bomb Unit responded to assist with Garcia's arrest.
