Police Fatally Shoot Fleeing Suspect In San Francisco Bayview

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — San Francisco police Sunday announced that investigators have recovered a gun they believe was used by a man killed Saturday in an officer-involved shooting near a Bayview train platform.

The man had been detained by patrol officers conducting a fare inspection on a Municipal Transportation Agency light rail stop at Third Street and Palou Avenue about 4:45 p.m., police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.

KCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports:

The officers were stationed in the area as part of an increased police presence to respond to recent shootings in the neighborhood, Andraychak said.

The 19-year-old man ran from the officers and allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot at them as they chased him on foot, police said.

At least one of the officers returned fire and wounded the suspect.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:01 p.m., police said.

No officers or witnesses were injured in the shooting.

Amateur video footage of the exchange showed that a passerby picked up the suspect’s handgun in the aftermath of the shootout and took it from the area before investigators were able to establish a crime scene, police said.

With the help of witnesses, police were able to identify the individual who took the gun and retrieved it Sunday afternoon, Andraychak said.

Police have not released the name of the man who was killed, citing an ongoing investigation.

Yep, sounds plausible that they’d have Fire and Rescue there immediately after the shooting to save him from “bleeding out like an animal.” They should’ve deployed a stealth VTOL medic chopper to the scene as soon as they shot him, a 15 second response time would’ve been sufficient.

For all of you who say that it was justifiable… maybe 1OR 2shot can be justified IF he fired@ them 1st. SF was once one of the thriving diverse cities in America. Along w/ positive always comes the negative, reaganomics w/ drugs turned SF into a war zone in the late 80s an early 90s. So the working class blacks began to leave. The Asian population grew along w/ the gay population. The city reconstructed bad neighborhoods, placing the poor minorities in other cities like Antioch, Richmond, Vallejo, Sacramento, Stockton, Fairfield, Modesto, Merced (which have seen an increase in crime in the last 20 years every year). so instead of correcting the problem, they just gave the problem to another county along w/ a boat load of cash. Now the mission district, which was all mexican businesses, now asian business has taken over and retail giants. The real etnic diversity in the city has taken a hit from the ignorant violence and self-destruction. Maybe it was by “design” maybe it was by coincidence, too be determined.

I’ve never been able to fully understand why police officers get paid for basically being suspended while being under suspicion for wrong doing. For everyone else, that’s called a VACATION!
