San Francisco Museum's 'Hand Holding Day' Reaches Out To LGBT Community

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)—San Francisco's Contemporary Jewish Museum celebrated Hand Holding Day on Sunday. The event comes one week after a security guard at the museum told a lesbian couple that hand holding wasn't allowed.

Jewish Contemporary Museum Director Connie Wolf said the security guard who told the lesbian couple not to hold hands worked for a contractor.

KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:

The guard doesn't work at the museum anymore and remaining security personnel have been given sensitivity training according to Wolf.

"We just feel like this was a person operating independently and we have taken every precaution to ensure that it will never happen again, because it's never happened before," she said.

Attendance appeared strong for Hand Holding Day with many same-sex couples doing just that.

One of the attendees was impressed by how quickly and creatively the museum responded to the "disappointing situation".

The Lesbian-Gay Chorus of San Francisco was among the groups performing at Hand Holding Day.

Wolf said Hand Holding Day served as expanded outreach to the LGBT community, something they had already planned on doing.

"We already had planned to have a day in which we were inviting LGBT families to come to the museum," said Wolf.

The Contemporary Jewish Museum plans more LGBT themed events for the summer.
