Man Shot, Critically Hurt As Family Fed Oakland Homeless

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – An Oakland man is in critical condition Wednesday after he was shot while feeding the homeless with his family in East Oakland early Wednesday morning, a police spokeswoman said.

Police responded at about 12:30 a.m. to the 1000 block of 47th Avenue after someone flagged down a California Highway Patrol officer to report the shooting, Oakland police Sgt. Holly Joshi said.

Officers found the man and his wife suffering from gunshot wounds, and the couple was taken to a hospital for treatment.

KCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports:

The woman’s injuries were minor, but the man’s were life-threatening, Joshi said.

She said the couple and their two young children had been handing out food to homeless people in the area and had pulled over to the side of the road.

An unknown suspect then pulled up alongside them and began shooting. Police Wednesday were still trying to identify the suspects, Joshi said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Police Department’s homicide section at (510) 238-3744 or email

  • Homeless Outreach Worker

As a homeless outreach worker, it is foolish to be out feeding people at this time of the night. Obviously, somebody thought that their “territory” was being encroached upon. Pray for the family.

Why would a man be out at 12:30 in the morning with his family in east Oakland handing out food. Something does not smell right. I would never have my family out at that time in the morning and I am a commisioned law officer who can carry my firearm anywhere. Just stupid.

I couldn’t agree more. Something is wrong here. As a Homeless Outreach Worker, there are places that I won’t go, let alone take my family and that includes my cousins in law enforcement. Something else is going on here. Even if they weren’t doing anything illegal, it was most definitely stupd.
