Oakley Makes Drivers Pick Up The Tab For DUI Accidents
OAKLEY (CBS SF) – Oakley has joined a growing list of Bay Area cities that are targeting drivers charged with a DUI. City officials are sending out bills to drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol whose accidents result in an emergency response.
Finance Director Paul Abelson said that the city has already brought in some money.
"We're talking about a few thousand dollars in the first six months, not anything that is going to make or break a budget, but it's still nice," said Abelson.

The bills range in amount from $400 to $800.
"Across the nation, 30 people die each day as the result of a drunk driving crash," said Gary McDonald, state executive director of California Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which strongly supports the effort.
More than 600 drunken driving arrests were made in Oakley last year, which is far more than in surrounding cities.
