Vallejo Police Report A Rash Of Storm Drain Thefts

VALLEJO (KCBS) – The grates over storm drains have been disappearing in Vallejo at a rapid pace, leaving several dangerous gaping holes next to street curbs.

In the past few weeks nearly 20 metal crates – some weighing more than 100 pounds – have gone missing.  The stolen covers, which hide catch basins that take water to the bay,  leave behind holes as deep as 15-feet.

Jennifer Kaiser, spokeswoman for the Vallejo Sanitation and Flood Control District said each one costs $300 to replace, meaning the district is already out about $6,000.

KCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports:

“They’re expensive for us to replace, and I don’t think that the metal thieves are getting much for them, which is always part of the frustration with metal thieves. They cause so much more damage than whatever they get out of it,” said Kaiser.

Kaiser said that the grates don’t have any identifying marks on them the way a manhole cover would, so they are hard to trace.

That will be $6000 and NOT $ 60,000, big difference.

Thank you! I kept hearing that story all day as I drove around and I knew something didn’t sit right with me. How could a reporter not even have the basic math skills to question the report? It’s no wonder the city is in trouble–they can’t manage their finances when they are off by a decimal point

  • Jennifer Kaiser

Just to clarify: Vallejo Sanitation & Flood Control District has not spent $60K on storm drain grate replacement. It was a simple mistake by the reporter. The District spends $300 per grate, and has replaced 11 of them in the last week and a half. The other 8 or 9 grates missing in the same time period were replaced by Caltrans, because they were near Highway 37. Our primary concern is to alert the public to be careful walking around town, and to let us know if they see a grate missing so it can be replaced immediately by calling (707) 644-8949. If you see someone stealing a grate, call 911. Please do not try to confront the thieves directly.
