GameDay: Why San Francisco Blew It On the Stadium Deal

CBS 5 Sports Director Dennis O’Donnell hosts “Gameday” every Sunday night at 11:30pm and offers his unique sports analysis here.

Watch the Raiders vs. 49ers, Saturday 4:30 p.m. LIVE on KPIX-TV CBS 5

San Francisco (CBS 5) – Ok..I get your message, ok??? After numerous emails regarding our in-booth interview with Jed York during Friday’s game in New Orleans, let me state our case. The 49ers want a stadium in Santa Clara. We have a partnership with the 49ers and they use the broadcasts as a platform to promote their agenda. In this case, a new stadium.

But why not? San Francisco? You had your chance. Sorry, Frank, sorry Willie, sorry Gavin, you blew it. One of the greatest franchises in NFL history and YOU couldn’t figure out how to get it done. What did you want Jed do to, move to LA? You know what San Francisco’s problem was? You think you’re this great big gem of a city and that ANYONE will come to you. Right. Of course, the Clash of the Egos didn’t help. Newsom and Dr. York couldn’t stand each other. I witnessed that first hand. Their egos got in the way of common sense, unfortunately for the rest of us.

I’ve been to several NFL cities for pre-season games, regular season games, and Super Bowls. This I can tell you. The best venues are those closest to downtown. (New Orleans and Indy come to mind) But it wont’ happen here and don’t blame Jed. It was time to find a city that COULD. And, sadly, that city is not San Francisco. I have to go now. I have a meeting at niner headquarters in Santa Clara and it takes me an hour to get there..WITHOUT game traffic! Thanks Gavin!

See you on TV.

Thanks Gavin for running the 49ers out and letting the homeless in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was born in San Francisco and raised in the east bay I’m a lifelong Giant and 49er
fan and I too agree that San Francisco is a bit too arrogant when it comes to their
sporting teams. Its no secret they have priorities they consider more important than
these 2 franchises.Put aside the photo ops when both teams won and were giving
San Francisco the free advertising to the rest of the world to help promote their top
priority the tourist industry. It will be a sad day for the city when the 49ers leave but
its the right thing to do for the 49ers to be competitive with all the other NFL cities.
The 49ers deserved a top rate facility in a good location for all that the good publicity
they gave the city for their accomplishments of winning the 5 Super Bowls playing
all these years in the worst stadium in the United States. What an embarrasment
that was.You should be ashamed for missing your opportunity.

  • Where's my public school?

It never fails to bring a tear to my eye when I think that the York family has to earn their billions in a sub-standard stadium. Shame on you taxpayers for the silly notion that the NFL should build their own stadiums. Anyway when I found out San Francisco wasn’t an “NFL city” I moved !
