Peninsula Woman Accused Of Killing Boyfriend's Lizard Won't Stand Trial
SAN CARLOS (CBS/AP) -- A court-ordered psychiatric evaluation has found that a San Carlos woman accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend's pet lizard is not mentally fit to stand trial.
37-year-old Shawna Kim Apour will receive treatment rather than possible incarceration for the attack on the bearded dragon and two scuffles with police.
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said the Golden Gate Regional Center on Wednesday found her incompetent based on a developmental disability.
Wagstaffe said Apour was committed to the Department of Mental Health and likely will be placed at Cordilleras Mental Health Center in Redwood City.
On Aug. 12 Apour's boyfriend found his pet Speedy stabbed between the shoulders, said police. The 14-year-old lizard was rushed to a veterinarian but died four days later.
