RICHMOND (CBS SF) – The suspect in what appears to be a shooting by a disgruntled security guard at a Richmond apartment complex on Wednesday night was in custody in El Dorado County, authorities said.

The security officer, 50-year-old Concord resident Doran Long Jr., is suspected of shooting at his supervisor around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of Hartnett Avenue.

The supervisor was hit by the gunfire but is expected to survive.

Early Thursday morning, at about 5:30 a.m., Long was pulled over by El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers after a short chase on U.S. Highway 50, according to a sheriff’s spokesman and Richmond police Lt. Bisa French.

Sheriff’s Lt. Bryan Golmitz said Long was bitten by a police dog after he refused to comply with officers’ commands, and was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being booked into El Dorado County Jail in Placerville.

A manhunt for the shooting suspect began Wednesday night after two other security officers at the Richmond apartment complex heard shots, then ran toward the security office and saw their coworker shooting into the building, French said.

At least one of the security officers shot at the shooter, she said.

After the shooting, Long fled in a red Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with at least three weapons—a rifle, handgun and shotgun, French said.

Long apparently had gotten into an altercation or dispute earlier Wednesday with his supervisor, according to French. He returned to the security office without warning that night and opened fire, French said.

French said that before returning to his workplace that night, Long had shot numerous rounds into his neighbor’s yard in Concord, narrowly missing a 9-year-old child.

Long is believed to have been working for the private security company Personal Protective Services and carried a gun for work, French said.

A spokesperson from the security company was not immediately available this morning.
