UC Regents Reschedule Meeting Postponed Over Safety Fears

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A University of California Board of Regents meeting postponed this week because of fears about violent protests has been rescheduled for Nov. 28, UC officials said Friday.

The regents were scheduled to meet Wednesday and Thursday at UC San Francisco’s Mission Bay campus, but decided to postpone the meeting following criticism that UC Berkeley police were overly aggressive in responding to “Occupy Cal” protests last week.

The regents said in a statement on Monday that they had “credible intelligence” indicating that violence was possible at the meeting.

The cancellation of the meeting prompted a march through San Francisco’s Financial District on Wednesday by students and members of public sector unions, as well as members of the “Occupy SF” movement.

During the march, protesters stormed into a Bank of America branch, pitching a tent inside the bank. Police responded and arrested 95 people who refused to leave, citing them for trespassing.

In Friday’s statement announcing the new date for the meeting, UC officials said the public comment portion of the meeting will be extended to a full hour instead of the usual 20 minutes.

The agenda for the meeting includes updates from UC staff members on several initiatives that have been launched in an effort to offset state disinvestments from the university and to provide alternate revenue streams for the schools beyond tuition and taxpayer support.

The meeting, scheduled for 9 a.m. at the UCSF Mission Bay Community Center at 1675 Owens St., will include UC staff in attendance on four campuses—UCSF, UC Los Angeles, UC Davis and UC Merced—who will be connected via teleconference.
