Residents Complain Of Poor Living Conditions At SF Residential Hotels

SAN FRANCISO (KCBS) – San Francisco seniors and the disabled were at the Board of Supervisors meeting Monday to complain about the living conditions in single room occupancy hotels.

A new study by the Senior Action Network and the Central City SRO Collaborative paints a painful picture. There are examples of eight people sharing a bathroom, or over 50 tenants forced to cook in a single kitchen. One man even brought to the meeting a bottle of bedbugs collected in his room, but security wouldn't allow them inside City Hall.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

"I had, for three months, dealt with lying in that room with the bed bugs," said the unidentified man. "I asked to be moved, but they refused to move me."

The Department of Building Inspection insists it vigorously pursues SRO's that are out of compliance.

The study said SRO's should be forced to improve security and maintenance, house the disabled on first floors, and thoroughly train staff.
