OAKLAND (CBS SF) — Thirteen Occupy Oakland protesters were arrested Friday after a series of confrontations with officers, police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.

At around 1 a.m. officers were called to Frank Ogawa Plaza on reports that protesters were attempting to set up a tent, Watson said.

Protesters did not comply with officers’ demands to take down the tent and three were arrested, according to Watson.

Ten more protesters were arrested Friday afternoon when, shortly after 2 p.m., public works crews arrived to clean the north side of the plaza, near where activists have erected a teepee and a food station, and protesters refused to allow them to clean, Watson said.

Watson said officers were called in to assist and protesters became “hostile and violent towards police.”

Some activists spit at officers, threw a chair, and engaged in physical altercations, Watson said.

One protester was arrested for persisting in an attempt to climb a tree despite officers’ demands to stop, Watson.

Another was arrested during a confrontation with a passing motorist.

According to Watson, protesters broke the window of a vehicle driving through the area. The driver confronted the demonstrators and one protester allegedly assaulted the man.

Some Occupy Oakland activists participated in a march this evening and no arrests or confrontations were reported, Watson said.
