Animal Update: Ensure A Healthy New Year For Your Pets

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Important decisions pet owners can make on behalf of their animals to ensure a healthy new year for them - that's the topic of this Animal Update with Dr. Jack Aldridge of the San Francisco SPCA.

Hard to believe, but it's 2012 and that means we're making New Year's resolutions - not just for ourselves but for our pets.

"If you haven't already done so, choose a good veterinarian for your pet," Aldridge advised. "One you trust, one who listens and is responsible. And, a yearly wellness checkup for both cats and dogs, which includes a medical and dental examination, is a proactive way to ensure your pet's health for the new year."
KCBS' Jeff Bell:

"It's important to follow your veterinarian's guidance about vaccination schedules for rabies as well as other deadly disease," Aldridge continued. "And have your dog or cat tested for heartworms and other parasites."
