OAKLAND (CBS/AP) — Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and other city officials have begun inspecting damage inside City Hall that was caused by about 50 Occupy protesters who broke in and smashed glass display cases, spray-painted graffiti, and burned the American and California flags.
Saturday’s break-in culminated a day of clashes between protesters and police. Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan said nearly 400 people were arrested on charges ranging from failure to disperse and vandalism.

At least three officers and one protester were injured.
Quan said Sunday that Occupy protesters have caused an estimated $2 million in vandalism since October. She said the cost to the city related to the Occupy Oakland protests is pegged at about $5 million.
KCBS’ Tim Ryan Reports:
The scene around City Hall was mostly quiet Sunday morning. It was unclear whether protesters will mount another large-scale demonstration on Sunday.

YES! Finally, the mayor and council are waking–speaking up! Perhaps it’s the burning of the flag in Oakland…or because Oakland gets trashed in the media…or instead of our attractions like sports teams, a museum, a zoo, Chabot Space and Science, Jack London Square, our downtown being promoted to visitors and tourists who’d enjoy our city while helping our small businesses and of course, Oakland’s sorely needed tax base? Or was it because we’re broke, laying off workers, and of course 5 million out?

I sure hope these 50 people were arrested, charged with breaking and entering, vandalism, arson, graffiti, but past conduct by Quan and her Occupy supporting husband I suspect nothing will happen to these terrorists.
Quan needs to be removed from office, the National Guard need to take over and put and end to mob rule that Quan and her progressive, husband not only tolerates but encourage.

If the OPD were in line, the Feds wouldn’t be taking over for them in 3 weeks. OPD is out of hand, and the mayor needs to be thrown out of office. You wonder why property destruction happens? Peaceful marches in the afternoon were met with tear gas and flash grenades. Of course people are going to respond to that with property destruction. The police manufacture these situations so they can claim the movement is full of “anarchists, hormonal children, and hippies.” They are taking a page from the “how to destroy movements” handbook. Their end is near, and they KNOW it.

That was a big factor in the Attica Prison riots and the riots during the 1968 Democratic Convention. It isn’t unusual at all.
However, there is a bad element in any large-scale protest. People with misdirected anger show up and do some horrible things which cause harm and work against the original cause.
It’s possible both forces were at work last night in Oakland.

P.S. why would anyone in their right mind respect buildings and flags that represent REPRESSION? Of course they’ll be destroyed. As long as state repression exists, property destruction will exist.

Dropping the charges or even lowering them is sending the wrong message all the way around. As for those demonstrators who claim they did nothing wrong I say, “what were you doing when the idots were vandalizing and throwing
bricks and bleach bombs at the cops?” The demonstrators themselves must monitor the actions and not hide behind the do your own thing argument.
If you fail to let the idiots know that their actions are undermining your cause then you have failed.

The mayor and council if didn’t encourage, surely were passive from the beginning. Following this since the beginning, I wondered how “Occupy Wall Street” morphed to invade Oakland…why Oakland…why not San Leandro, Fremont, Newark…? Now we’re being trashed on national media and all the above attractions, including CHINA TOWN in down, are being overshadowed by the so-called mayhem And, how many protesters are like we, taxpayers/homeowners, voters, and enjoy our city for its attractions? Maybe the mayor and council have some insight? Sure like to hear it!

The best way to stop the occupy movement is to boycott Oakland, no restaurants, no movies, no sports events, and most importantly do not buy you drugs in Oakland take bart to SF it is cheaper and safer.

If these idiots want Ogawa Plaza, LET THEM HAVE IT!!!! Just build a downtown prison around them and incarcerate them, permanently.

The people who committed vandalism disgraced themselves.
We should recognize that the Occupy Oakland protesters who committed these crimes are not part of a legitimate movement. The sincere activists seek to make real progress in creating a society which respects all people. They demonstrated their sincerity by helping with repairs after similar horrors last year.
The political debates on this issue are predictable: Far right conservatives make generalizations about protesters, and far left liberals make generalizations abut the police. The truth is, some individuals behave with dignity, and others do not.

I do not belong to the 1%, but Occupy does NOT represnt me, nor I, it. I WORK, SUPPORT, and EDUCATE myself without a sense of entitlement.

If you cannot afford to live in SF/Bay Area, GET OUT, and stop preventing people who do work and can afford to live in the area from getting to their jobs and supporting themselves and their families. No one owes you anything.

This makes me sick. I never really paid much attention to the “Occupy Movement” until they started destroying property. What a disgrace to the bay area. I wish OPD could shoot these people in the back of the head when they pull these stunts. I would fully support it. How can Oakland be rated as one of the places to visit when they have a bunch of these goofballs running around trashing the city. Oakland having a useless mayor isn’t helping out either.

Somehow I feel that the mayor has up ’till now favored the occupy vs us, including our police dept. Our police dept protects us and she has indirectly put them under the microscope. Every contact I’ve had w/our police has been very polite and trust me, I’d call our police in an emergency before I’d ask the mayor or a protester to respond. Right now I favor the police and the latter two are useless to me as a homeowner/resident/taxpayer/shoppe/part of the 99% Oakland folk.

I’d like to know how the mayor plans to recoup our lost 5 million? Maybe realize that our attractions: sports teams, Oakland downtown including Chinatown, museum, zoo, Chabot Space and Science, Jack London Square should be promoted as Oakland to recoup both monies and a good face for Oakland. If the mayor feels the protesters are a better draw for our city, we’ll let’s know that answer too.

Gotta say, ‘Oakland If you’re hoping that I’ll come as a tourist to your city… fat chance.
I might come and join your Occupy movement though.

I watched this from three different camera angles. They couldn’t disperse- they were being blocked in. The only route out of the protest was through tear gas clouds. Several asked to ‘disperse’ and were told to go through that route- tear gas. They had no other way to get out.
They then were blocked into a corner and again refused to request to leave. I don’t condone the damage those that escaped did, not at all, but I know what I saw through three different live cameras.
Americans, you’re being lied to by your own council. Your own mayor. Your own media. Good luck with that.

um…get your facts straight. They had been asked to leave since 11am that day. You bet they were blocked in. So they could be arrested. They were asked all day to leave – when they realized they were blocked in only THEN did they want to leave. Sorry too late. Time to face the music.

To KPIX: I’d assume the 5 million cost to the city involves only overtime and damages? The question I would have for KPIX would be what’s the collateral damage to Oakland’s small businesses, lost wages for those 99%’ers who work there, possible lost tourist dollars, and lost tax monies, including the KPIX van’s broken rear window?

Why hasn’t Mayor Quan been arrested yet? For misuse of tax dollars among other things. Wasn’t that long ago Mayor Quan PAID city employees with OUR tax dollars, so those city employees could take the day off and participate in the #OWS violence and anarchy. So now she says enough is enough? What a sick joke she is.

And speaking of sick jokes, Obama’s ACORN operatives (and ACORN subsidiaries) have been paying protesters to show up as well.
When will Obama be arrested for treason? Hopefully soon.

When I invite my family and friends to visit here, they joke. Oakland is considered a circus of distractions and the butt of jokes. Who’s in charge? Who’s on first? What’s on second? I don’t know who’s on third?… reminds me of…
