Proposed Golden Gate Recreation Area Dog Ban Under Fire

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The park service is reconsidering plans to ban dogs from certain areas of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area after receiving thousands of comments about the proposal, many of them critical.

Park service representatives announced this week that they will come up with a new, improved proposal by the end of the summer.

The current plan would close off many areas of the GGNRA in San Francisco and Marin County to dog walkers and require dogs to be leashed on still other park properties.

Park service officials and environmentalists say they want to protect native plant and animal species.

The park service's new plan will also consider dog-walking policies for Rancho Corral de Tierra on the Peninsula.

A man allegedly walking his dogs off-leash there on Sunday was hit with a stun gun by a park ranger.
