OAKLAND, Calif. (CBS SF/AP) – The Bay Area Rapid Transit Agency has agreed to look into the possibility of extending train service about 5 miles to Livermore.

BART’s Board of Directors on Thursday unanimously approved moving forward with environmental studies and a ridership plan for the $1.1 billion project.

But they also requested a closer look at express buses and other alternatives to extending BART and asked for information about how the extension could impact maintenance and improvements to the existing train system.

The extension would run from BART’s current end point at the Dublin-Pleasanton station down the middle of Interstate 580 to a planned freeway interchange.

KCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports:

Supporters say the project would ease traffic congestion and pollution in the area. Critics say BART should focus on maintaining and improving its existing lines.

Really? So how much is that going to cost? I think the solution is staring BART right in the face. JUST FIX IT! I’m amazed as how BART officials continue to waste money with corporate jargon. We should be demanding that all BART Management “please” step away and let competent people run puplic transportation. You’ve wasted more than 40 years with mis-management and now that BART is aging…no ancient! You want more money from the public and government? Why was there no money put away for “special project?” Because management was pocketing the money. Checked their salaries lately? Want a copy? BART had the capacity to build a state-of-the-art facility at the Concord station to build and maintain the BART trains. What has happened? Do I need to repeat it? Because management was pocketing the money. Checked their salaries lately? Want a copy? We need honest people who take pride in what they do. Time to change and rebuild America! Take pride in what you do people. This is our country and “we” fix this ourselves! Be the change you want to see!

What is there to study? Whether you build the extension or not, plain and simple. Why waste the extra money to get other people’s opinion? Freeway 580 is one of the worst commute freeway period. Just build the dang bart extension.

BART should consider non-rail, or perhaps DMU to low-population Livermore. BART needs to refocus to get the most benefit to BART, its existing and new riders, most farebox recovery, and most environmental (including human)benefits…that means finishing the last 28 miles from the now-funded BART extension into Santa Clara up to Millbrae+SFO, the gap remaining around the Bay…hello, B.A.R.T.! Using funds to from ending the Caltrain Killtrain (178 dead since 1995, 16 slaughtered on its tracks last year, 2 already this year) up the Peninsula ($120M/yr), redirecting Dumbarton Rail funds to BART (since BART will cover all DB Rail cities–cleaner, greener, and safer) ($1B build, xx to operate/yr), and tear down the ugly, decaying DB rail pylons to return the southern SF Bay to its pre-1910 natural state. Unify SF Bay Area heavy rail service under one high-capacity system, frequent, safe, electric, system that is scheduled to be largely in place by 2018. Think of it…10-15 years of full-time, high-paying, local construction and related JOBS, while providing real Berkeley-SF-Stanford-SJ -Fremont-Oakland seamless mass transit!
