Pinole Man Shot Dead In Richmond Park

RICHMOND (CBS SF) - The Contra Costa County coroner's office has identified a man who was fatally shot in Richmond Tuesday night as a 25-year-old Pinole resident.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, police found Rene Garcia with gunshot wounds near the basketball courts in Shields-Reid Park at 1410 Kelsey Street, authorities said.

A ShotSpotter alert that went out around 6:45 p.m. indicated that 15 to 20 shots were fired at the park, Detective Nicole Abetkov said.

Police said at least two shots hit Garcia's upper body.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 7 p.m.

No suspect information was found and police continued to investigate the shooting in the hopes of finding witnesses, Abetkov said.

Garcia's death marks Richmond's fourth murder this year, according to the detective.
