Bicyclist Seriously Injured After Crash With SF Muni Bus

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A bicyclist was taken to a hospital with life threatening injuries Tuesday afternoon after a crash involving a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus.

Police responded to reports of a crash at Market and New Montgomery streets around 4:40 p.m.

Police said it appears the male bicyclist was riding parallel to the bus when one of his tires got caught in streetcar tracks.

The bicyclist was thrown under the bus and was run over by its rear wheels, according to police.

The bicyclist was taken to San Francisco General Hospital.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call police at (415) 575-4444 or send a tip via text message to TIP411.

Some of these cyclists are plain dumb and love to assert their rights to peddle in between cars and busses. Newsflash, San Francisco streets are dangerous and not designed for bicycles. I love riding a bike but I’m smart enough to know that if I compete with a car or bus I’m going to lose (esp. if the driver doesn’t even know I’m there).

The vast majority of streets were NOT designed for bicyclists. The have to grow up and figure that out and come off their high horse (bike)!

  • Calnadian

There is nothing in the article to suggest the bicyclist was doing anything crazy or stupid! I bike frequently to work, always obey the rules of the road, always wear a helmet, and never do anything crazy…yet my bike tires have been caught in the streetcar tracks on previous occasions. Thankfully nothing like this happened to me. They are grooves that are perfect width and depth to pose a serious risk, and I hope this guy lives to advocate it. A friend of mine lost several teeth after getting thrown from his bike in a similar accident. It is something the City needs to address if it wants us to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Please stop using an awful accident as a venue to spread your hate of bicyclists. Equivalently hateful claims could be made of vehicle drivers.

Thanks for the comment. What is up with these bike haters? Poor guy gets hurt and all they want to do is spew biker blanket prejudice. Biking is the solution to SFs transportation woes and it costs very little to improve city bike-ways.

Really Caknadian? We all know what polite dudes and dudettes these bicycle riders are. And no one is spewing hate (except cyclists towards automobile drivers). Don’t be such a drama queen.
