A's Release Backup Catcher Landon Powell

PHOENIX (CBS/AP) - The Oakland Athletics have released catcher Landon Powell, a non-roster invitee to spring training this year.

Powell has been Oakland's backup catcher behind Kurt Suzuki each of the past three seasons, but played in only 36 games in 2011 with a .171 batting average, one home run and four RBIs.

He appeared in 123 games over the last three years with Oakland. Powell is a .207 career hitter with 10 home runs and 45 RBIs in three major league seasons.

Oakland's 40-man roster is at its limit.
