2 Arrested In San Pablo Phone Theft Killing

SAN PABLO (CBS SF) - Two men were arrested in San Pablo Tuesday on suspicion of fatally shooting a 29-year-old man and stealing his cellphone, according to a police sergeant.

Joseph Ellis, 27, of Richmond and 22-year-old Kenneth Byrd of San Pablo were arrested early Tuesday morning on suspicion of murder, robbery, conspiracy and evading police, Sgt. Jose Barajas said Wednesday.

Jaihro Lopez, 29, of San Pablo was fatally shot in the 2300 block of El Portal Drive around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Alerted by a ShotSpotter activation, officers arrived at the scene and found Lopez suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest, Barajas said.

Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police spotted Ellis and Byrd running from the area, Barajas said.

Officers quickly caught one suspect and used a police K-9 to capture the other, he said.

Detectives combed the area and found Lopez's cellphone and two handguns.

Barajas said the pair's only motive for the killing was to rob Lopez, whom they did not know.

The suspects were booked into county jail in Martinez where they are being held without bail, the sergeant said.

The incident is San Pablo's first homicide of the year.
