Golden State Warriors Looking At Santa Cruz Site For D-League Team

SANTA CRUZ (CBS SF) - Santa Cruz city officials and the Golden State Warriors have entered talks to build a basketball facility that would become the home of an NBA Development League team from Bismarck, North Dakota.

The Warriors bought the Dakota Wizards year, and hope to move them to Santa Cruz next season where they would play at a $2.5 million facility to be built at a site between downtown and the beach.

"We thought that might be good to revitalize the area," said Santa Cruz City Manager Martin Bernal.

KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:

Bernal said an empty site now owned by Seaside Company had been identified as the likely location of a venue that would seat 3,200 for basketball and 5,000 at concerts or other events that used the entire floor.

"The city would essentially build the shell of the facility and then the Warriors would outfit it," Martin said, adding the city's share of the construction costs would be repaid by revenues generated by the facility.

The Wizards have been in Bismarck for 17 seasons, and Wizards General Manager Kirk Lacob said the purpose of the move was to bring the team closer to the Warriors.

The Santa Cruz City Council placed the proposal on its April 10 meeting agenda.
